Caroline Steffen: Professional Swiss triathlete with an Aussie accent. Born in Spiez (Switzerland) and moved to Australia in 2009 to follow her dreams and become a World Champion.
Early years, Caroline enjoyed success as a swimmer competing on the Swiss national teams and winning multiple national titles. In 2002, Steffen underwent shoulder surgery and retired from competitive swimming afterwards.
In 2006, just for fun, she entered and placed second in her age group at Ironman Switzerland, posting a sub-10h time. She went on to start at the 2006 Ironman World Championships in Hawai’i where she posted another sub-10h time and place third in her age group as an amateur.
Caroline moved on to concentrate on bicycle racing as she was not enjoying the swim training and felt that her running was a competitive weakness. After it was determined that she was too big to be a climber and not fast enough to be a sprinter, her role on the team was to set the sprinters up for the finish of races. As a professional cyclist she was showing improvement but the sport was not providing her with satisfaction. In May 2008, Caroline decided to leave the team and try her luck as a pro triathlete.
Soon after, Caroline was competing in Ironman competitions again. She moved to Australia and eventually quit her job to focus on triathlon. With in no time, Caroline gained the attention of coach one of the sports most recognised coaches in Brett Sutton who eventually invited her to join the professional triathlon team ,TBB, earning the nickname "Xena the Warrior Princess" or simply "Xena." A few months later Caroline won her first major race, the Ironman 70.3 in Geelong in February 2010. She highlighted 2010 with a win at the ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships and a second place at the Ironman World Championships in Hawai’i. In the following years, Xena was one of the most dominating female athlete in the sport, adding another 7 major long course titles and 23 Ironman 70.3 victories to her resume.
Now as a new mother to baby boy Xander, Caroline starts a new chapter in her career which needs even more support as she balances life as a mother and an elite athlete. She is very excited and proud to have RYD in her corner and as she embark on this next stage of her journey.
